Project Details
Project Description
This project consisted of constructing a new bridge on North River Rd over the North River. North River Rd is the main point of connection to US 101 for the small communities of Vesta and Brooklyn, making maintenance of this arterial for the local commuters of vital importance. Grays Harbor County chose to replace the existing timber and concrete structure that was constructed in 1951. The existing structure was both structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.
The new bridge is 450 feet long, 4 span prestressed concrete girder bridge founded on 5- and 9-foot diameter drilled shafts. The 9-foot dimeter drilled shafts supported the interior piers of the bridge located within the floodplain of the river. The large size and location of the drilled shafts required using large machinery in close proximity to the river. Stringent monitoring of environmental conditions and swift construction of the drilled shafts led to no issues.
Other items of work included: clearing and grubbing, roadway approach construction, reconstruction of the intersection of North River Rd and McKinely Rd at the north approach of the bridge, storm drainage installation, asphalt paving, guardrail installation, landscaping, striping, and permanent traffic signs.
